Today feels like a great day to remind writers and editors that small acts of kindness have the greatest impact on those who are beginning their journey on this platform and beyond. I don’t know about you, but my heart fills with happiness whenever I see new brave souls joining writing communities or setting out to start their own one!
It is easy to support new publications on Medium and help them gain visibility/readership. Whilst growth takes time, consistency and a lot of patience, there are a few actions writers and editors can take to help them along the way. It’s the little things that make a big difference!
Here are 5 ways you can support a small publication:
1. Follow them
Following a publication allows us to access their latest stories easier, as they will show up on our Medium feed as soon as we log in. This way, we can keep up to date with their newest prompts, insights and guidelines.
2. Clap some of their articles
Let’s stop mistaking claps for external validation and start using them in more empowering ways, such as to show other writers and editors alike that we are actively supporting them and appreciating their content. Trust me, even one genuine clap goes a long way!
3. Leave positive reviews/PMs
Responses are perhaps equally as valuable as claps! We may not always have time to leave one, but that’s what makes them special! Similarly, we can drop a PM on the articles we resonate with, if we’re not comfortable with the idea of doing it publicly. A few words of encouragement for the editor and their new writers will make their day!
4. Share their articles
If we enjoy being part of a publication and wish to spread the word about it, the best way to so is by sharing them on our social media — Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Substack, etc., or even other writing platforms such as Vocal or HubPages.
5. Sign up to their newsletter
If the new publication has a newsletter, signing up to it will benefit the editor immensely, as it allows them to build a mailing list and expand their pub beyond Medium. At the end of the day, don’t we all want to aim higher? The sky is not the limit.
*Bonus*: If you’re a writer with a large following, consider contributing with some quality articles. This is guaranteed to help the pub gain exposure and make your readers/fellow writers aware of a new, exciting home to explore!
Publications are not dying on Medium, they are starting a new cycle! The changes this platform has been undergoing is offering us the opportunity to build strong communities of like minded writers and flourish — make sure you don’t miss it!
